Shrinking
Shrinking is a tool holding system wherein the tool holder is heated, the tool is inserted into the holder, and the whole assembly is cooled rapidly which then secures the tool. This toolholding method is used primarily for high speed machining centers and the usage of high speed tooling. There is a cost advantage of thermal toolholding over conventional clamping mechanism as well as excellent concentricity, lack of wobble and highest clamping force. Since ZOLLER’s introduction of the "redomatic" system which combines presetting and measuring with shrinking, heat-shrinking technology has gained popularity. The "redomatic" system can set tools to their nominal dimensions with an accuracy of +/- 0.01 mm (0.0004 in.). A sign of considerable progress in the field of heat-shrinking technology is the ability to preset, measure and shrink tools for multiple spindle machines which can then operate without having to make corrections.
